Seventy years ago, American chemist Willard Libby devised an ingenious method for dating organic materials. His technique, known as carbon dating, revolutionized the field of archaeology. Now researchers could accurately calculate the age of any object made of organic materials by observing how much of a certain form of carbon remained, and then calculating backwards to determine when the plant or animal that the material came from had died. A geological dating method first proposed by Ernest Rutherford over years ago is now being used successfully at Waikato University. Earth Sciences Professor Peter Kamp says Rutherford recognised in that two heavy radioactive elements, uranium and thorium, gave off helium ions as they decayed. Now we can use it to solve some very important geological problems.
The method relies on a piece of apparatus which is able to extract and measure helium trapped within tiny crystals, usually of zircon or apatite, less than one tenth of a millimetre across. We take one of those individual grains and heat it to degrees with a laser, so in only about 15 minutes, we de-gas the helium which is in those crystals. Dr Martin Danisik, who arrived at the university in December, has been responsible for getting the system operational. The helium has other gases removed from it and is then passed to a mass spectrometer, a device which identifies and measures quantities of atoms by their mass.
Because of the minute amounts of gas involved the line has to be maintained at a very high vacuum — about one trillionth normal atmospheric pressure. Once the helium has been measured, the crystal is dissolved and its uranium and thorium content is analysed in a separate mass spectrometer. A date can then be calculated. There are about 10 operational helium lines in the world, most of them built by New Zealander Des Patterson.
