Scientists use certain elements present in a certain abundance to calculate an approximate age for rocks. One of the decay ratios used is Uranium decaying through a series of alpha and beta decays to Lead. The number in superscript preceding the element name indicates the atomic mass, the sum of its protons and neutrons. Alpha decay releases a Helium nucleus two protons and two neutrons from the parent atom to create two atoms: the released Helium and a daughter product that has an atomic number two less than the original and an atomic mass four less than the original. Using the amount of the remaining Uranium, the amount of Lead that has built up, and the original amount of Lead which is not created by any known decay process, scientists can calculate an approximate age based on the decay rate of Uranium and the ratios of Uranium to Lead and Lead to Lead. Some creationists claim that there is too much helium in Earth’s crust for the earth to be any more than two million years old Sarfati,

Seventy years ago, American chemist Willard Libby devised an ingenious method for dating organic materials. His technique, known as carbon dating, revolutionized the field of archaeology. Now researchers could accurately calculate the age of any object made of organic materials by observing how much of a certain form of carbon remained, and then calculating backwards to determine when the plant or animal that the material came from had died. An isotope is a form of an element with a certain number of neutrons, which are the subatomic particles found in the nucleus of an atom that have no charge.

Aristotle thought the earth had existed eternally. Roman poet Lucretius, intellectual heir to the Greek atomists, believed its formation must have been relatively recent, given that there were no records going back beyond the Trojan War. The Talmudic rabbis, Martin Luther and others used the biblical account to extrapolate back from known history and came up with rather similar estimates for when the earth came into being.

Within decades observation began overtaking such thinking. In the s Nicolas Steno formulated our modern concepts of deposition of horizontal strata. He inferred that where the layers are not horizontal, they must have been tilted since their deposition and noted that different strata contain different kinds of fossil. This position came to be known as uniformitarianism, but within it we must distinguish between uniformity of natural law which nearly all of us would accept and the increasingly questionable assumptions of uniformity of process, uniformity of rate and uniformity of outcome.

Age of Earth

Helium and Polonium has been shockingly found present in zircon crystals of granite layers in the Precambrian—oldest rock layers on earth. Such discoveries challenge naturalistic ages of the earth because here helium is a gas that escapes rapidly and Polonium has a half-life of mere seconds yet, the granite rocks that contain them are assumed as being many billions of years old. So which age is correct the bedrock granite or young Helium and Polonium? Helium in zircon crystals which are obtained from drilling into very deep granites.

These crystals contain Uranium which is radioactive and decays to Lead. A by-product of this process is the formation of Helium, a very light, inert gas which readily escapes from rock.

For decades, young-Earth creationists (YECs) have desperately sought “scientific evidence” to attack radiometric dating and protect their.

Radiometric dating of rocks and minerals using naturally occurring, long-lived radioactive isotopes is troublesome for young-earth creationists because the techniques have provided overwhelming evidence of the antiquity of the earth and life. Some so-called creation scientists have attempted to show that radiometric dating does not work on theoretical grounds for example, Arndts and Overn ; Gill but such attempts invariably have fatal flaws see Dalrymple ; York and Dalrymple Other creationists have focused on instances in which radiometric dating seems to yield incorrect results.

In most instances, these efforts are flawed because the authors have misunderstood or misrepresented the data they attempt to analyze for example, Woodmorappe ; Morris HM ; Morris JD Only rarely does a creationist actually find an incorrect radiometric result Austin ; Rugg and Austin that has not already been revealed and discussed in the scientific literature.

The creationist approach of focusing on examples where radiometric dating yields incorrect results is a curious one for two reasons. First, it provides no evidence whatsoever to support their claim that the earth is very young.

Helium Retention in Zircons Demonstrates a Young Earth

Helium Retention in Zircons Demonstrates a Young Earth zircon is the mineral most frequently used in various radioisotope dating methods.

A geological dating method first proposed by Ernest Rutherford over years ago is now being used successfully at Waikato University. Earth Sciences Professor Peter Kamp says Rutherford recognised in that two heavy radioactive elements, uranium and thorium, gave off helium ions as they decayed. Now we can use it to solve some very important geological problems.

The method relies on a piece of apparatus which is able to extract and measure helium trapped within tiny crystals, usually of zircon or apatite, less than one tenth of a millimetre across. We take one of those individual grains and heat it to degrees with a laser, so in only about 15 minutes, we de-gas the helium which is in those crystals. Dr Martin Danisik, who arrived at the university in December, has been responsible for getting the system operational. The helium has other gases removed from it and is then passed to a mass spectrometer, a device which identifies and measures quantities of atoms by their mass.

Because of the minute amounts of gas involved the line has to be maintained at a very high vacuum — about one trillionth normal atmospheric pressure. Once the helium has been measured, the crystal is dissolved and its uranium and thorium content is analysed in a separate mass spectrometer. A date can then be calculated. There are about 10 operational helium lines in the world, most of them built by New Zealander Des Patterson.

The Slovakian-born Dr Danisik spent a year with him assembling one in Germany.

How Science Figured Out the Age of Earth

Christman, Ph. Few areas of science have posed a greater challenge to Young-Earth Creationism than radiometric dating of rocks and minerals. These techniques, which have been in use for nearly a hundred years, show that rocks from the earth and moon, as well as some meteorites, are as old as 4. That observation is clearly at odds with the belief that world is only around years old.

expressly calibrated to date young samples (Geyh and Schleicher, ). known to have changed over the last 10, yr due to variations in the earth’s magnetic a helium isotopic composition identical to that released in the crushing step.

The closure temperature increased with the equivalent spherical radius assuming a constant cooling rate. The He ages from FCT zircons were negligibly affected by grain size because of the rapid cooling. He preserved in the zircon was sensitive to temperature and holding time, and the temperature range for zircon HePRZ gradually decreased with increasing holding time.

Weak correlations between the He ages and effective uranium eU concentrations from the FCT zircons indicated radiation damage did not significantly affect He diffusivity. Allotropes Some elements exist in several different structural forms, called allotropes. Each allotrope has different physical properties. For more information on the Visual Elements image see the Uses and properties section below.

Creation dating required careful accounting of the chronology given in Genesis and then As the Sun’s core converts hydrogen into the heavier element helium,.

The age of Earth is estimated to be 4. Following the development of radiometric age-dating in the early 20th century, measurements of lead in uranium-rich minerals showed that some were in excess of a billion years old. It is hypothesised that the accretion of Earth began soon after the formation of the calcium-aluminium-rich inclusions and the meteorites. Because the time this accretion process took is not yet known, and predictions from different accretion models range from a few million up to about million years, the difference between the age of Earth and of the oldest rocks is difficult to determine.

It is also difficult to determine the exact age of the oldest rocks on Earth, exposed at the surface, as they are aggregates of minerals of possibly different ages. Studies of strata —the layering of rocks and earth—gave naturalists an appreciation that Earth may have been through many changes during its existence. These layers often contained fossilized remains of unknown creatures, leading some to interpret a progression of organisms from layer to layer.

Nicolas Steno in the 17th century was one of the first naturalists to appreciate the connection between fossil remains and strata. In the midth century, the naturalist Mikhail Lomonosov suggested that Earth had been created separately from, and several hundred thousand years before, the rest of the universe. Lomonosov’s ideas were mostly speculative.
